Antique and contemporary chair repair

Bring new life back to your heirlooms

Chairepair chair restoration

Christopher Gillott Chair Repair

Good quality furniture can last a lifetime and beyond with the right care and attention.

Chairepair is established and operated by Auckland furniture restorer Christopher Gillott in response to an upsurge in interest in the restoration of domestic chairs from many styles and ages. Not that long ago, chairs were disposed of and replaced with updated styles, commonly from a local manufacturer.

Today's replacement chairs are usually sourced from overseas manufacturers in styles and timbers which are not suitable to all. Consequently, there is a    movement to recycle furniture in general and chairs in particular.

During my many years in the furniture restoration business I have repaired many items and there is no doubt that the most abused item is the domestic chair.

Reclining on two back legs, use as a mini work station or as makeshift stool to replace a light bulb - it's no wonder that they become loose and sometimes break.

Even well cared for chairs sometimes require attention around frequently handled areas, where the finish has become worn.

So why get your chair restored?

Nearly all chairs can be restored and it is very satisfying to see the newly restored chairs have a new lease on life. There are very good reasons to have chairs restored - here are just a few:

  • To retain a chair that may hold sentimental value.
  • To maintain a matching set - even a  relatively  new chair may meet misfortune and become damaged. A replacement may be impossible to source. Restoration then becomes an attractive and cost effective solution.
  • Added strength - chairs made in the modern era often have joinery failure. This can be corrected with modern materials /adhesives providing more resilience.
  • As a mark of respect for recently acquired heirlooms.
  • Older and antique chairs are exclusively restored using traditional methods and materials.
